Security Alert: Career Hackers Create “Training Tool” For Novice Criminals
Hardcore hackers have created an easy-to-use tool that even beginning criminals can use to jump-start their evil empires. The tool is called “Microsoft Word Intruder” or MWI for short and it is being sold on underground forums to novice hackers.
MWI creates infected Rich Text Format (RTF) documents with payloads that exploit numerous vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word. Opening these files will infect the victim’s computer. It is designed to steal financial information, login credentials and has also been known to deliver ransomeware like Cryptolocker.
These infected documents are being spread primarily through Spam emails.
To protect yourself:
- Be super cautious about opening any attachment in an email, especially from untrusted sources. When in doubt — delete it!
- Keep antivirus and anti-malware programs updated and run them frequently. XSolutions updates and runs its antivirus solution on all managed servers and workstations every evening. If you’re not one of our clients, then you should follow this best practice on your own (or become a client and we’ll do it for you).
- Use an advanced spam filter in addition to the one that comes with your email system. XSolutions has an excellent Advanced Spam Filter that stops 99.9% of Spam from ever reaching your inbox giving users maximum Spam protection. Call (845) 362-9675 for details.
Infectious email attachments are on the rise once again. Constant vigilance is essential and critical to the security of your business and your company’s clients.
This newest threat is not to be taken lightly.
